What is it like to work with me?

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a forward looking approach to making change in your life. Unlike therapy it is not based on a medical model and the majority of the work is not looking into the past. ADHD coaching is similar to other life coaching, but it incorporates an additional “ADHD lens”.  Together we see where deficits in executive skills may be getting in the way of your child’s success and figure out supports to put in place to address those challenges.

A coaching session follows a framework that allows the client to see their true selves through powerful questioning.  The coach is right there with you every step of the way but does not decide the destination or the goal.  The agenda is entirely up to you.  You may not have a clear vision at the beginning but through our work you will gain clarification about your direction and destination, and discover which obstacles are getting in your way.  Through the process, I can give you helpful tips, strategies, and tools that may help you to understand you or your child better and improve communication in your family.  I can also help you and your student understand more about the learning process which can result in having more academic success.

Individual Coaching

As a life coach specializing in ADHD and executive skills, I work with children, adolescents and young adults and their families and support them to connect, communicate, gain independence, and grow a deeper awareness of themselves.  When working with younger clients, the majority of the work will be with the parents, but I also will do occasional sessions with the child as needed.

If working with older teens or college-aged students, I will sometimes only work with the teen or young adult and not the parents.  For teens struggling with academics, I have a toolbox of tips around study techniques and together we can learn which strategies are the most effective for their learning. This process is really empowering to the student and allows them to discover their unique strengths and gain a better understanding of how to study more efficiently.  I will keep the parents abreast of the child’s progress upon request.

If you are ready and willing to make change, coaching is a transformational process.  If this sounds compelling and you are anxious to get started to help yourself and your child, please contact me on the form on this website.  I would be humbled to do this work with you.

Group Presentations

I am also available to do presentations for parents and teachers about executive skills and how to support our children to develop them.  When teachers gain more understanding of these skills and how they affect their student’s success in the classroom, they feel empowered to adjust their program to create appropriate supports.   Likewise, when parents gain a clearer picture of their child’s unique brain wiring and understand how they learn, they can support and encourage them in appropriate ways that allow for growth and change.  When adults better understand a child’s obstacles, it allows them to come from a place of more compassion and less frustration.  This is good for everyone!

How do you get started?

Go to the contact page on this website and give me your basic information so that I can contact you. In the “comment” box, give me a brief description of what you are hoping to get out of coaching. I generally respond within 48 hours to set up a good time to chat.

The next step is to have a chat that will last between 30-45 minutes. We will discuss your concerns, aspirations, and any questions you have about coaching. There is no charge for this conversation. It is, at this time, that we will discuss my fee structure.

Still excited? Now is when the fun starts! You will decide whether you want to meet 2, 3, or 4 times a month and we will get you on my calendar. In between sessions, we may have check-ins depending upon your preference. For the most effective change, it is recommended that you get coaching for a minimum of three months, but I am flexible regarding this commitment.

Expectations

As with any relationship in life, it is important to have transparency and clarity from the beginning.  This is why I would like to share with you what you can expect from me, and what I, in turn, expect of you.

These are the expectations that you can have of me:

  • I will not judge you or your  progress.
  • I will be open and honest.
  • I will show up for each session and be present.
  • I will bring expertise, perspective, and experience as appropriate.
  • I will try to notice details and bring them into focus.

What I expect of you:

  • To be fully present.
  • To be open and authentic.
  • To see me as your success partner.
  • To take command of your direction and be honest if something doesn’t work for you.
  • To make payments on time.
  • To try to give a month’s notice if you would like to terminate services.
  • To give me 24 hours advance notice of cancelling an appointment, when possible.
