What is Executive Function?
The prefrontal cortex of our brain is the section that allows us to “execute a task”. We literally use these skills for everything we do in life. These tasks include but aren’t limited to:
- response inhibition (impulsivity)
- working memory
- emotional control
- sustained attention
- task initiation
- planning prioritization
- organization
- time management
- goal-directed persistence
- flexibility
- metacognition
While these skills will develop as your child grows, some kids experience a delay in them which may cause issues because they are being expected to have a skill set that they may have yet to develop. This can lead to frustration for both you as a parent and for your child. It can affect academic, social, and emotional development. Through our work together, you will gain an understanding of how deficits around executive skills may be creating obstacles for your child and how we can provide support to not only overcome those deficits, but to move beyond them to succeed.
